Biography of Mickey Rountree
I've been a photographer since the late 70's when I inherited my Dad's Canon Ftb 35mm. In 1978, after moving to Chattanooga, I entered and won my first photography contest. That picture prompted one of my friends to refer me to the photography program at Cleveland State. So from 1979 to 1981 I completed the photography courses for an Associate Degree in Photography at Cleveland State Community College under Jerry Berman.
I've been doing portraits and glamour and some commercial work since the mid 80's. For the last few years, my personal work has involved HDR photography of anything old, and also airshow photography. In the last couple of years I have started doing more travel and landscape photography and also teaching workshops.
After 40 years as a respiratory therapist, 29 of that teaching respiratory care, I have retired so I am now free to travel and photograph at will.
For years I worked with 35mm, 6X7 and 4X5 formats in black and white and color. After getting hooked on black and white in school, I had the opportunity to build a large custom darkroom when I built my house. In 2008 I made the leap into digital and I have never looked back. in 2013 I finalized my switch to digital by selling all of my film systems, and all of my darkroom equipment. I now work with Canon cameras (5D Mark IV and 7D Mark II) and lenses, (from 8-15mm fisheye to 100-400mm and everything in between). I edit with Lightroom, Photomatix, and Photoshop and I use NIK, Portraiture, Lucis, Portrait Pro and Topaz plugins.
Besides school and lots of reading and online training, I attend as many seminars and workshops as I can get to. For portraits I've studied with Charles Lewis, Marty Rickard, and Ed Pierce. For glamour I've studied with Colin Tower, Ken Marcus, Robert Alvarez, JT Smith, and Rolando Gomez. For commercial I've studied with Nancy Brown, Lindsay Adler and Dean Collins. I've attended general photography seminars with George Lepp, Rick Sammon, Adam Jones, Eddie Tapp, Darrell Gulin, Bob Coates and Scott Kelby and Photoshop with Ben Wilmore and Pete Collins.
Throughout the years I have won several national awards (Kodak, PSA, Peterson's Photography), and numerous awards in the PSC (Photographic Society of Chattanooga) including six Peoples Choice Awards, and two pictures of the year and Best of Show in the 3CT Fall 2015 Contest.
Over the last few years I have been a judge for several local, national and international photography contests.
I’m active in the Photographic Society of Chattanooga. I was Treasurer in 1987 and President in 1988 and 2014, and 2020. I taught the Bootcamp class for beginning photographers for two years. Currently I'm on the PSC board of directors, and the competition chairman. I have also written a series of articles for the PSC's newsletter, The Contact Sheet. Most of these I have added under the articles heading of my page.
You can also see some of my work animated in my portfolio on Plotaverse.
